The Horror of War; A True Story About a Few Good Men and a Pig
This is a story of tragedy and heartbreak all the way around. Young Marines being picked off by insurgent snipers as a brave, dedicated and ever diligent Navy Corpsman fights to administer emergency medical aid on site...
I was feeling bad enough reading about the young men who are dying, or who are being disabled for life, and then it hit me, right between the eyes like a 16 ounce hammer, when I read about the poor pig who was tortured mercilessly for fifteen hours (shot in the face twice, then in the body with an assault rifle, and later set on fire) as part of a training course given to the medic who is the subject of this story.
I have been around in this world, and there is little that truly shocks me anymore, but when I read about this poor pig everything inside me sank to my feet. This creature feels pain every bit as much as a human does! It suffers just like we do. In addition, it has, by the time these things are done to it, developed some kind of trust in those who feed and care for it, only to be betrayed by these people in the cruelest and most hideous ways imaginable.
Trauma physicians, EMTs, and nurses save lives everyday, and not just in the well equipped emergency room, but out in the field, after auto accidents, building fires, industrial and construction accidents, natural disasters, and yes, gun shot wounds (including those inflicted upon police officers) which occur all to often right here in our homeland. These people do not train in this barbaric manor, nor do they have to in order to be effective! While it sickens me to think about what is happening to our troops every day in this war that never should have been, it sickens me every bit as much, in fact it is gut wrenching to think that we are treating innocent animals in this despicable and horrific fashion! There simply has to be a better way to prepare our medics for their vital role in the battlefield! Of course you can rest assured, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld couldn't give a pigs ass.
