Songbird Rocks!

I came upon this new media player via The Alarm Clock. There is a great video presentation explaining how it works at Screencast and you can learn more about the product and the company by visiting the Songbird website.

PS: The company’s animated mascot, a fat black bird who appears to be either in need of Beano, or is rocket propelled, is both awesomely cute and cool!

Google Shmoogle

In my opinion Google is a bit overrated. It can still be difficult to find some obscure fact or statistic, and often, the information is buried several pages deep, with all sorts of useless stuff getting the higher rankings. I have had to try typing several variations of a query before obtaining the proper results, and while this doesn’t happen all the time, it happens too often in my opinion.

An article in today’s NYT DealBook highlights a few firms that are emerging with the lofty ambitions of taking on Google, and interestingly, I think a few just might have a real chance of doing it, based on the new approach these businesses are bringing to the game of search.

Making Search Accessible to the Visually Impaired

Google is working on enhancements that will assist the visually impaired in using their search engine. In my opinion, anything that addresses the needs of those with impairments is a good thing, although Google and others may be dragging their heels a little bit.

The Future of Traditional Media

A merger between traditional media and the Internet is inevitable. This is the future, and I am glad to see that some of this is beginning to happen, after much resistance, for the most part, by major traditional media companies. Both Google and Yahoo have entered into agreements with major traditional media organizations, and this is a positive start. I have also long envisioned a day when everything available in the yellow pages is available on line, and where that information can be accessed quickly by hand held devices, such as cell phones and PDAs, and we are moving in that direction as well.
